Between Gold and Sand
Telschig supplies industrial plant to Abu Dhabi
The United Arab Emirates is experiencing a construction boom of unprecedented proportions. Abu Dhabi is emerging as a new Mecca of the construction industry. German building contractors, engineers and manufacturers are in great demand with the sheiks, as the reputation of German suppliers as being reliable and sound and providing high-quality products has spread as far as the country of the “Thousand and one nights". Telschig Verfahrenstechnik GmbH is one of the companies selected, and supplied two Big Bag emptying and conveying plants for cement, microsilica and fly-ash to Abu Dhabi a few months ago.
It is seven o’clock in the morning when Fritz Höntzsch, supervisor with Telschig Verfahrenstechnik GmbH, leaves the hotel in Abu Dhabi. He makes his way to the huge construction site operated by XTRAMIX located about an hour's drive away on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. The thermometer is already reading 30°C.
When he arrives on site, the trained fitter, welder and master machine builder contacts the plant manager responsible, to clarify all the parameters relating to the installation. "It was dusty and hot, and the wind blew the sand into your eyes. Hardly ideal working conditions, but we accept every challenge", recounts Fritz Höntzsch.
Despite the difficult conditions, there was intense activity on the building site. At peak times, around 75 cubic metres of green concrete is produced and processed per hour. For this the concrete mixing plant needs around 25 tonnes of cement every 60 minutes - a real challenge for cement handling. This is where the Big Bag emptying and conveying plant supplied by Telschig was to come into operation. "With a throughput of 10 tonnes per hour for microsilica and 25 tonnes per hour for cement and fly ash, the plant was highly suitable for the conditions on site", explains Fritz Höntzsch.
Since both the plants are five metres tall overall, a mobile crane had to be procured to install the individual plant components directly. Then came the training of the Xtramix operators. "Since only two days had been allowed to install and commission the plant, training had to be both fast and detailed. That made it particularly important to have qualified employees available to provide the training promptly and correctly", it explains Fritz Höntzsch.
Work on the construction site generally proceeds along the same lines. When installation has been completed, the plant is tested by means of a dry run, i.e. with no product. When the plant has passed the first test, there is another run, this time with the real product, such as microsilica or fly ash. When the plant is functioning to the satisfaction of the customer, an acceptance report is composed and signed by the customer.
After a total of three intensive days’ work in the hot sun of the Arab Emirates, Fritz Höntzsch sets off back home to Germany. "Physically these foreign jobs are a real challenge because of the long flights, extreme climatic conditions and the time difference", he reports.
